Bob Bunce and the team at Humber Wood Recycling Project make a point of creating opportunities for people in the local area by fully embracing diversity in the workplace, largely to the benefit of the project.
Gavin started with Humber Wood on a work trial which gave him the opportunity to showcase his strengths. This trial subsequently led to Gavin successfully gaining paid employment with Humber Wood, he has since proved to be a great asset to their project.
Gavin’s learning difference means he struggles with literacy and numeracy. To overcome this Humber Wood have accessed Gavin’s skills by making reasonable adjustments and seeking free support locally from Mencap. The minor adjustments made include discussing with Gavin the best ways in which he learns. One such way was using pictures instead of literature within one of their health & safety modules. This simple step has aided Gavin attain a mandatory health and safety standard required to work at Humber Wood as well as helping him succeed in his role.
‘Gavin has an infectious passion and enthusiasm for the work we do, he brings a competency and a reliability we don’t always get from others’. —Bob Bunce, Enterprise Manager at Humber Wood Recycling Project
